Excavation of a spread of burnt-mound material was carried out in advance of construction of the N6 Phase 2 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway scheme. The site, which was uncovered during pre-development testing works, was excavated over a period of three weeks in June 2006. Removal of the burnt-mound spread uncovered the remains of a single trough cut into the natural boulder clay subsoil, around which a number of wooden stakes were placed into each corner of the feature.
