Monitoring of topsoil removal took place north-west of Killala during the realignment of the R314. The base of an S-shaped ditch was uncovered on a prominent hill overlooking Killala Bay. It was seen curving across the road-take and extending into the wayleave on both sides of the road. Much charcoal was found within the ditch fill. Two pits and associated post-holes were uncovered within the same area. The fill of one of the pits contained burnt bone.
There were no small finds associated with these features. Two flint cores were found during topsoil removal above the archaeological remains.
It is expected that a third pit in the same area, at present seen in section on the western edge of the road-take, will be excavated during the coming season.
