Pre-development testing was carried out on 6 February 2006 at a site at Killimor townland, The Neale, Co. Mayo. The proposed development was partially located within the archaeological constraint for a church. The church, named as ‘Killimor Church (in Ruins)’ on the 6-inch OS sheet, was not visible from the proposed development site and was located over 60m away. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a dwelling house, proprietary effluent treatment unit, septic tank and percolation area. The proposed development was situated in an overgrown field that contained the ruins of a dwelling house, abandoned in 1928, and a number of outhouses.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of three trenches, which were located along the proposed driveway, through the proposed dwelling and from the proposed dwelling through the proprietary treatment unit and through the percolation area. The trenches measured 25.1m, 14.8m and 30.5m long respectively, 0.9–1.3m wide and 0.1–0.7m deep.
Below the topsoil was orange/grey/brown friable silt loam and bedrock. The testing revealed evidence of natural undisturbed stratigraphy and nothing of archaeological significance. Only modern artefacts were recovered, from the topsoil.
