Trial-trenching was carried out in the yard of the stable block of the former Killala Union Workhouse, which had been established in 1851 in the former Bishop’s Palace, also known as ‘the Castle’, on the southern edge of Killala town, in advance of a planned redevelopment of the site. Four trial-trenches were excavated. Limited remains of cobbled surfaces were discovered in two of the trenches, but ground disturbance was extensive in all four trenches and nothing of further archaeological significance was noted.
