Testing was undertaken in this area on 23–30 August 2005 to ascertain its archaeological potential as specified in the EIS. The enclosure is located c. 2m to the west of the Kilmovee road, outside the line of the road-take of the new N5 Charlestown bypass. An area located at an altitude of 113m OD and measuring 50m north–south by 20m was tested using a 360° tracked machine with a 2m-wide toothless bucket inside the CPO line. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were present in this area.
A second test-trench was subsequently opened along the existing Kilmovee road adjacent to the eastern portion of the enclosure, in order to investigate if the enclosure survived under the existing road. The test-trench measured 50m north–south by 0.2m by 0.5m deep and was opened using a mini-digger. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were present in this test-trench, which was excavated to the depth of the natural subsoil.
