Testing was conducted on 5 January 2006 at Area 48, Newtowndarver, Castlebellingham, in advance of construction works on the south–north gas pipeline. Testing was based on the results of the EIS carried out in 2004. Two trenches measuring 30m by 1.6m were excavated using a mechanical excavator fitted with a 1.6m-wide ditching bucket. Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered in either of the trenches.
