Testing was conducted at Area 50, Mansfieldstown, Castlebellingham, in advance of the construction of the south–north gas pipeline on 4 January 2006. Testing was based on the results of the EIS carried out in 2004. Two trenches measuring 30m by 1.6m were excavated using a mechanical excavator fitted with a 1.6m-wide ditching bucket. A small shallow burnt spread was found in Trench 1 measuring 3.7m by 1.56m. It consisted of a greyish-black silty clay material with much charcoal and small angular stones. The spread measured 0.02–0.1m in depth. No artefacts were recovered from the spread. Nothing of archaeological significance was found in Trench 2.
