It is proposed to construct a residential development at Carrick Road, Lisnawully, on the outskirts of Dundalk, Co. Louth. The site is located outside of the zone of archaeological potential for Dundalk and, while no known archaeological sites exist within the development boundaries, a number of archaeological monuments have been identified in the immediate environs.
An assessment, in the form of 49 mechanically excavated test-trenches, was carried out on the site in advance of construction. The assessment identified a number of areas of archaeological activity across the area of the development. Following the assessment, it was agreed that the area surrounding the identified remains would be extended and full-scale excavation of the archaeological material would be undertaken.
In all, six distinct areas of archaeological activity were excavated. Of these, five were identified as the remains of burnt mounds of probable Bronze Age date. The final area consisted of a series of ditches and pits, the function and date of which could not be ascertained.
