Testing was carried out at Area 8 in advance of construction works on the south–north gas pipeline between 29 February and 1 March 2006. Testing was based on the results of the geophysical survey. Area 8 was located in Dromin townland, Co. Louth.
Area 8 is RMP site LH018–059(01–03), described in the RMP files as ‘the site of St Finian’s church, which is locally believed to be on the hill known as “Killerdrim”. Burials and possible grave slabs were unearthed here.’
Three trenches were excavated using a mechanical excavator fitted with a 2m-wide bucket. The spoil was spread to check the artefact-bearing potential. Nothing of archaeological significance was found in any of the three trenches. No evidence of human remains was uncovered. No artefacts were recovered in the spoil from the trenches.
