It is proposed to construct a multistorey car park, a group of apartments and a shopping mall with 10–12 retail units along with associated services. Prior to construction, monitoring of the 56 pile pad pits was undertaken. The development limits contain an earthwork or fortification, LH017–101/05. Previous assessment carried out by ACS under licence 03E1045 identified limited remains of probable medieval date.
Monitoring of the excavation for the pile pads was carried out during April 2006. A pit and a ditch were recorded within two of the pile pad pits and a small section was manually excavated through both the features. No artefacts were retrieved from either section to indicate to which period these features belong. It was decided that, should the proposed development require further excavation in the area of these pits, then they will be negatively impacted upon and will require further archaeological investigation.
