A programme of archaeological excavations was undertaken as part of the N4 Dromod Roosky bypass at the request of Leitrim County Council. In total, 25 potential archaeological sites were identified during centreline testing as part of the advance archaeological investigation (see No. 1214 above, 05E0983).
Archaeological deposits were identified within the development footprint in an area of reclaimed bog. Excavation of the site was carried out on 8–23 June 2006. The excavation covered an area of 30m (north–south) by 12m. The archaeological deposits comprised three tertiary toghers and four deposits of archaeological wood. All of the structures and deposits were composed of brushwood, roundwoods and twigs. The three tertiary toghers were simple, single-phase constructions and all displayed evidence of modern disturbance and damage. The deposits of archaeological wood were heavily fragmented but may represent the remains of more substantial sites. A piece of finely dressed brushwood was recovered from one of the deposits of archaeological wood.
No dates are currently known for these sites, but the presence of metal-cut toolmarks indicates that they date to the Bronze Age or later.
To the south-east of Tomisky, in the townland of Edercloon, 27 toghers, five platforms and seventeen deposits of archaeological wood were excavated by Caitríona Moore (see No. 1315 above, A031–025). The archaeological sites excavated in Tomisky and described above are likely to be part of the same archaeological complex.
