Monitoring was undertaken in June 2006 prior to the construction of both the Cavan Road and Granardkille pumping station sites as part of the network extensions at Granardkille and Carragh, Granard, Co. Longford. Granard is a plantation town dominated by a huge Anglo-Norman motte (LF010–055(03)) at the southern end of the town, which is raised high above the local landscape and is considered to be the largest man-made mound in Ireland.
One of the pumping stations will be built in the townland of Granardkille, at the western end of the scheme. This pumping station is close to the medieval town of Granardkille, LF010–078–79, and an enclosure, LF010–077. The second pumping station is located in the townland of Carragh, along the Cavan Road. The Cavan Road pumping station will be located close to LF011–009.
Although the sites of both pumping stations were located relatively close to various monuments, topsoil-stripping in the area yielded no results of archaeological significance.
