Monitoring of piling was undertaken to ensure the protection of the masonry structures present on the site. The test-pits in the bank of the Abbey River also covered by this licence were excavated in order to ensure that no archaeological structures were being disturbed by the six piles which were being placed there in order to support a boardwalk. However, these test-pits were later excavated under a dive licence and are subject to a separate report (see No. 1292 above, 05D0125).
In all, nine piles were moved in order to avoid obstructions of a suspected archaeological nature or modern disturbance. The masonry structures encountered had for the most part been exposed during the excavation, or were continuations of walls which had been exposed. Of the archaeological obstructions encountered, only the wall which obstructed Piles 61 and 63 had not previously been uncovered. An examination of the construction and orientation of the wall showed it to be part of the foundations of the Georgian terrace constructed during the development of Sir Harry’s Mall.

Editor’s note: Although this licence was issued during 2005, the report on the work was not received in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
