Testing was undertaken in advance of the construction of an extension to St John’s Hospital, Limerick, which has several extant fragments of historic fabric within its grounds (medieval town wall, 17th-century citadel wall and gatehouse). It also lies within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town. Due to space constraints, two trenches were excavated measuring 6m and 5m respectively, 1.8m in width and 1.8m in depth. The natural parent material was exposed in each trench. Despite the location of the trenches, nothing of an archaeological nature was revealed.
