Testing was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of this site as a health centre. Due to the presence of structures on the site, three trenches were excavated, 21m, 15m and 14m respectively and averaging 1.8m in width and 1m in depth. The site was located outside the line of the medieval defences of the historic town and on the perceived line of the 17th-century fortifications. All trenches revealed archaeological features that were interpreted as dating to the post-medieval period. It has been suggested that, if these features cannot be preserved in situ, they should be excavated by hand.
