Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of eleven dwelling houses at Lord Edward Street, Kilmallock, was undertaken in 2005 and 2006. The development site is located immediately outside the line of the medieval town wall but is within the zone of constraint for the town of Kilmallock (LI047–022). Previous testing of the site (Excavations 2004, Nos 1013–4, 04E0678) uncovered the remains of a mural ditch associated with the town wall and other miscellaneous cut features. Raft foundations were utilised for the houses in the area of the mural ditch and did not directly impact on this feature.
Monitoring of the foundations for house Nos 6 and 7 revealed the presence of a number of linear features, but raft foundations were also utilised in this area and the features remained undisturbed. Monitoring of the remaining house foundations and service trenches did not reveal the presence of any further archaeological features. Monitoring of groundworks in the courtyard area of the development, however, uncovered a number of features of archaeological potential, which were excavated under an extension to the licence (see No. 1273, Excavations 2006).
