An impact assessment involving a test excavation was carried out prior to planning approval for the construction of a single dwelling house at Gormanstown Philips, Kilmallock, Co. Limerick. The proposed development lies within the archaeological constraint zone of an earthwork complex surrounding a castle and two enclosures. These were identified from an examination of aerial photographs of the region during work on the Curraleigh–Limerick gas pipeline in 1986. The assessment included the excavation of four test-trenches in those areas of the development where maximum ground disturbance was envisaged. These were all excavated to a level below the natural boulder clay and no features of archaeological significance were noted in any of the investigated areas.
