Test-trenching on a 5.5ha site intended for a housing development, on the western margins of the medieval town of Caherconlish, has located pits and linear features. Some of these features contained pottery and clay tobacco pipe dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. A single sherd of possibly medieval pottery was also found. Geophysical survey (06R0205) and documentary evidence support these indications that parts of this site have a high archaeological potential. Targeted excavation is expected to take place in 2007.
