A previously unrecorded potential standing stone was noted in a greenfield site to the west of a water treatment building at Ballybricken creamery during an assessment of proposed upgrading works carried out by Sarah McCutcheon, Limerick County Council Archaeologist. A licence was issued to the writer to carry out test-trenching in the vicinity of the potential monument to establish if it was archaeological in origin. The scheme was subsequently redesigned to avoid the area of the standing stone, which will be preserved in situ. Following consultation with the National Monuments Service it was agreed that all ground-reduction works associated with the upgrading scheme should be monitored. The upgrading works involved the installation of a 6.82m2 chlorination tank, a chain-link fence and a car parking area measuring 10m long by 3m wide. Topsoil-stripping was monitored to the level of the undisturbed natural subsoil and no archaeological features or finds were uncovered.
