A programme of archaeological excavations was undertaken as part of the N4 Dromod Roosky bypass at the request of Leitrim County Council. In total, 25 potential archaeological sites were identified during centreline testing as part of the advance archaeological investigation (see No. 1214, Excavations 2006, 05E0983).
Georgia 1 consisted of a burnt mound, its trough and 23 stake-holes, predominantly situated on the eastern side of the trough, and two small pits, all of which appear to belong to the same period. The site was on dry land overlooking raised bog to the east. A flint scraper was found during soil-stripping. The site consisted of a spread of fire-cracked stone and charcoal-rich soil, extending over an area measuring 5m by 4.1m, and was up to 0.1m deep. It covered a subrectangular partially stone-lined trough measuring 1.3m by 1.8m and 0.5m deep. It was mainly filled by large blocks of burnt stone in a matrix of silty charcoal-rich clay. A cluster of 23 stake-holes was excavated, predominantly located on the south-eastern side of the trough. All the stake-holes were quite narrow with varying depths, the maximum being 0.24m and the minimum 0.05m. They may have acted as a windbreak.
