A programme of archaeological excavations was undertaken as part of the N4 Dromod Roosky bypass at the request of Leitrim County Council. In total, 25 potential archaeological sites were identified during centreline testing as part of the advance archaeological investigation (see No. 1214, Excavations 2006, 05E0983).
Furnace 4 consisted of a linear field boundary of large stone slabs laid end to end across the test-trench. Collapsed stones were present on either side. This was part of a field boundary, which continued on either side and formed the boundary between stony pasture and wetter land. No dating material was recovered and the feature was not considered to be of archaeological significance.
