An assessment was carried out in advance of the planned M7 Portlaoise to Castletown/M8 Portlaoise to Cullahill motorway scheme (Contract 3) by ACS Ltd. The archaeological assessment of Contract 3, Testing Area 5, involved the mechanical excavation of 41 test-trenches, a combined length of 1885 linear metres, resulting in an excavated area of 3770m2. This testing area is situated in the townland of Trumra at Chainage 29050–19230.
Only one feature of archaeological significance was identified. This feature has been designated Trumra 5 and consisted of an isolated spread (2.5m by 1.5m by 0.2m in depth) with dark-brown silty clay with occasional charcoal flecks and broken cracked sandstone. It directly overlay the natural subsoil and there were no associated features. This spread was truncated by furrows and drains. The samples from this site have yet to be analysed.
