This site was located within Contract 2 of the proposed M7 Portlaoise to Castletown/M8 Portlaoise to Cullahill motorway scheme and was identified during advance testing by Robert O’Hara (Excavations 2005, No. 859, A015/029). Full resolution occurred in June 2006 and revealed that Boherard 1 comprised the remains of two separate areas of burnt-mound activity. The larger of the two areas comprised the remnants of a ploughed-out fulacht fiadh consisting of some small spreads of burnt-mound material. Numerous pits were also present, with at least one functioning as a trough, while the smaller area sited over 20m to the west contained only a small spread of burnt-mound material and an associated circular pit.
No artefacts were found in association with any of the features/deposits exposed on site. Soil and charcoal samples currently await analysis.
