An assessment with testing was undertaken at 11 Patrick Street, Kilkenny, in advance of a proposed development comprising alterations to the existing building and construction of a three-storey office building to the rear. The site is located on the east side of Patrick Street in the city centre within the zone of archaeological potential for Kilkenny city. The site is defined by a tall random rubble wall on the northern and eastern sides, a protected structure.
Four test-trenches were excavated on the footprint of the proposed development. The remains of six pits and two walls were recorded in the trenches. These features occur between 53.8 and 54.4m OD and 0.35–0.4m below current ground level. The nature of the pits and the width of the walls would suggest that the features are medieval in date. They are morphologically similar and lie in close proximity to the medieval features encountered in the adjoining site at Stratham’s Garage (99E0757 ext.)
Archaeological excavation of the area of the site will take place in 2007.
