Test-trenching at a proposed development site in a yard to the rear of 38 Parliament Street revealed modern yard deposits extending for 0.6m below modern ground level. These deposits overlay a mortar-rich deposit, with frequent brick inclusions, that measured 0.3–0.4m deep and sealed a 0.15m-deep dark silty sand deposit containing occasional inclusions of slate, brick fragments and animal bone. There were no artefacts recovered from this dark deposit, but it may correspond to a late medieval layer containing inclusions of crushed slate uncovered by Paul Stevens during test-trenching in the adjoining property (Excavations 2000, No. 546, 00E0128). This dark deposit overlay the greenish sandy gravel natural subsoil, which was encountered at 1.13m below modern ground levels. The proposed development will involve the excavation of raft foundations to a depth of 0.6m below modern ground levels and this will impact on the modern yard deposits only.
