Test-trenching was carried out in the former grounds of St Joseph’s Industrial School before construction of a two-storey residential development for people with special needs. The proposed development site is located to the east of a nuns’ burial-ground, which was established in the 1860s and remained in use until the 1980s. The topsoil layer consisted of a dark humic silt-rich soil with moderate inclusions of 19th/20th-century artefacts. A number of cultivation furrows and drain features were exposed in the subsoil and these also contained early modern inclusions. There were no archaeological features or artefacts, or any evidence for human remains, uncovered in any of the test-trenches.
