Monitoring of groundworks in an untested area in Granny townland was carried out during construction of the N25 Waterford city bypass. The groundworks involved the construction of a culvert in order to drain and stabilise a filled-in marshy inlet on the north bank of the River Suir, which extends into the road corridor. The area impacted on by the culvert is on the line of the N24 tie-in (Chainage 500) with the bypass and is located 50m to the east of Granny Castle (KK043–034). The south end of the culvert area is delimited by the existing N24 road, which was widened and realigned in this area during the second half of the 20th century. The N24 separates the monitored area from the River Suir channel, although they are linked by a storm drain extending through the concrete road embankment. This area of the river flood-plain is tidal and the excavation area was prone to flooding at the time of groundworks. The west end of the area impacted on by the culvert was previously investigated by Caitriona Gleeson (Excavations 2004, No. 887, 04E0929) and a post-medieval drystone wall was exposed and excavated. No archaeological features or deposits were uncovered during construction of the culvert.
