Testing was undertaken at the site of a proposed house development. The site is located on the northern extremity of the zone of archaeological potential (ZAP) established for Old Kilcullen. The ecclesiastical elements of the ZAP are situated c. 175m to the south-west of the site. A triangular green, c. 30m to the south of the proposed development area, is believed to be the site of the medieval ‘fair green’, the northern edge of which is speculated to retain the line of the town wall/defensive bank.
Four trenches were excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of testing. It was recommended by the DoEHLG that the development should only proceed following the grant of ministerial consent. However, planning permission was subsequently refused by Kildare County Council.
