Phase II of the test excavation of the Naas Southern Ring Road took place between September 18 and 20, 2006. Phase II commenced at the Kilcullen Road and continued 60m east of the Ballymore Road encompassing 420m of road-take. Phase I had been previously tested by Brenda O’Meara (see No. 958 above). Test excavation took the form of centreline trenching, with alternate 90° offsets at 20m intervals, which were excavated to the edge of the proposed road-take. The trenches measured 2m in width and varied in depth between 0.25m and 0.4m depending on the depth of the topsoil. Natural subsoil varied between a compact yellow sandy clay and a grey gravelly clay. The western extent of the route (Ch 01000–Ch 01040) was not available for testing due to the presence of numerous services, which run in a north–south direction from Naas town along the Kilcullen road. Ten metres of centreline trench between Ch 01080 and Ch 01100 had to be omitted due to the presence of a 10kv overhead wire.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during testing.
