The excavation of four test-trenches took place on 17–19 May 2006 at the site of a proposed development at ‘Abbeylands’, Clane, Co. Kildare, in order to investigate the remains of a ‘roadway’ that had been uncovered during previous testing. The original archaeological investigations at the site uncovered a deposit of water-rolled stones that lay in the highly compacted sandy clay. It was proposed that these features constituted the remains of the metalled surface of a ‘roadway’. However, present investigations would suggest that this deposit of stones and clay constituted the bed of a stream. Indeed, in the 1908 OS map for the site the presence of a stream in the area of the testing is to be found. Therefore it can be argued that what was identified as a ‘roadway’ in the original investigation at the site constituted natural deposits.
