A pre-development test excavation was undertaken in the townlands of Tonbwee/Killegane on the southern outskirts of Castleisland. The site is scheduled for development as a residential housing scheme. The assessment entailed the excavation of eleven test-trenches to determine the extent and nature of subsurface archaeological remains on the site. Ten of the trenches were laid out across the footprints of the proposed houses and one was positioned along the line of a proposed bypass road extending in a north–south direction along the western area of the site. The trenches were 1.5m wide and all were excavated with a wide toothless grading bucket to the surface of the natural subsoil. The topsoil consisted of brown clayey silt and reached an average depth of 0.37m. It overlay compact orange/brown boulder clay with occasional small stones and no features or finds of archaeological importance were noted in any of the excavated areas
