A track machine using a 2m flat grading bucket incrementally excavated 24 trenches across the footprint of a proposed housing development and associated access-ways and services, at Ballygarran, The Spa.
The topsoil throughout the site was a blackish-brown silty clay with an average depth of 0.35m. The subsoil varied from a soft mottled yellow/orange/white silty clay to natural pockets of black pencil stone. Agricultural activity was recorded, in the trenches towards the west of the site, in the form of stone field drains. No archaeological artefacts or stratigraphy were recorded in the test-trenches.
