A non-disturbance visual assessment and metal-detector survey were undertaken of the construction footprint of three proposed floating-breakwater structures at Knightstown Harbour, Co. Kerry.
Visual inspection and magnetometry survey by handheld metal detection was employed to assess the archaeological potential of the seabed at each of the three proposed breakwater locations. Detailed descriptions were made of seabed topography and bottom composition and, where possible, metal-detector hits were examined. The survey was concentrated within the construction footprint for each breakwater. However, a sizable buffer zone was incorporated into the dive survey, extending the survey 7.5m either side of the proposed breakwaters. Intensive survey was undertaken over a seabed area of c. 1240m. While concentrations of modern debris and fishing boat jetsam were identified, no archaeologically significant deposits/structures were encountered as part of the survey.
