Testing as a component part of an archaeological impact assessment was undertaken at a proposed development site at Castletown, Kilflynn, located to the rear of a post office and shop premises. Views from the site were restricted, with the exception of the western side, which had views towards a church site, KE021–142.
A track machine with a 2m flat grading bucket incrementally excavated thirteen trenches across the footprint of the proposed housing and access way layout. The topsoil varied from a mid-yellowish-brown silty clay to a dark-brown silty clay towards the west of the site, with an average depth of 0.4m. The subsoil was a light-yellow silty clay of varying compaction.
Agricultural activity was evident in some trenches in the form of stone drains, aligned north-west/south-east. These drains were 0.4m in width and constructed of medium sub-angular stones.
No archaeological stratigraphy or artefacts were recorded during test excavations.
