All topsoil-stripping was monitored at a large-scale commercial and retail development near Dingle in April 2006. Mechanical excavators with grading buckets were used to strip topsoil down to the upper level of natural subsoil. Topsoil varied in depth from 0.15 to 0.4m and comprised dark-brown peaty silt including large and small stones; it overlay stony yellow/grey sandy clay subsoil. It was clear from the outset that the site had been cleared in recent years and a number of modern open drains were located across the site. As a result, the area had been badly disturbed and no archaeological features were recorded.
