Assessment on the proposed route of the N6 Galway to Ballinasloe road scheme (Contract 3) involved targeted test excavation of selected areas. Work was commissioned by Galway County Council and the National Roads Design Office and sponsored by the National Roads Authority. Geophysical survey carried out in advance of testing by Archaeophysica Ltd had suggested the presence of linear ditches and, as a result, this part of Toormore was subject to targeted investigation. Approximately 580m2 was tested using a mechanical excavator. All trenches were excavated to the top of any features of potential significance or to the natural substrate, whichever was encountered first. Centreline, offset and extra trenches were arranged to include those areas highlighted as potentially significant by the geophysical survey. Modern field drains, cultivation furrows and some minor geological deposits were exposed, but features of archaeological significance were not discovered.
