Excavation was carried out in advance of construction on the N6 Galway to Ballinasloe road scheme; the site was located 4.2km from the town of Athenry. Testing by Tom Janes in 2005 identified the remains of a burnt spread (Excavations 2005, No. 651). Excavation revealed the burnt spread to be relatively modern, and this was confirmed by the discovery of a clay pipe stamped ‘Home Rule’. A metalled farm track and dismantled drystone wall were also discovered.
The work was made possible as a result of funding and cooperation from Galway County Council and the National Roads Authority
