Pre-development testing was undertaken on the site of a proposed residential development located on the site of a former mill at Parkavara in Galway city. An assessment of the site previously undertaken recommended pre-development testing. In December 2006 four trenches were mechanically excavated in the course of testing. The trenches were excavated in areas that would not impinge on the existing waterfall (sluice gate and ratchet system), which is to be conserved as part of the new development. The stratigraphy revealed that the site naturally sloped from east to west, with various levels of fill material overlying natural clay or rock. Two cut-stone blocks were recovered from Trench D and are probably associated with the former saw and woollen mills at the site. It was recommended that all ground disturbance at the site be monitored.
