Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to a commercial property at Barrack Street, Loughrea, Co. Galway, on 24 April 2006. The site is located in the heart of the historic town. A mini-digger fitted with a grading bucket was deployed to excavate a single test-trench on the footprint of the proposed extension.
A garden soil deposit, 0.45m in thickness, directly overlay the boulder clay in the south part of the trench. To the north a large irregular pit extended 1.3m to the base of the trench. The pit fill was similar to the overlying garden soil deposit and contained modern ceramics and clay-pipe fragments. No archaeological material was uncovered.
