Testing was carried out at Liss, Headford, Co. Galway, in June 2006 on behalf of Galway County Council. The proposed development entails the construction of a 35m by 40m reservoir tower site and a 12m by 40m approach road, all enclosed by drystone walling. Testing was undertaken between 16 and 22 June 2006.
Trench 1 was excavated by hand through an anomalous circular feature, identified in the pre-development assessment and situated in the south-west of the site. Trenches 2–5 were excavated by machine through the remainder of the site.
Testing concluded that the feature at the south-western end of the site was archaeological in nature. The interior of the stone and clay bank indicated that the feature constituted the remains of a stone cashel. A roughly circular 9.5m section of this feature will remain in the interior of the land-take and will require protection. Mitigation in the form of avoidance was recommended.
