Monitoring of all ground-disturbance works associated with the insertion of 116m of gas pipeline was undertaken in June 2006. Twenty-seven metres of pipe was installed along the route of Kirwan’s Lane and 36m of pipe was installed on Quay street via Blake’s Castle and Jury’s Hotel. A further 53m of pipe was installed by means of subsurface directional drilling from Quay Street to the Quay by Wolfe Tone Bridge via the medieval Fish Market. The line of the drilled pipe (1m depth) crossed the known route of the medieval city wall, but no obstructions were encountered. The gas pipe was installed in Kirwan’s Lane and Quay Street within an open cut trench. This trench had an average width of 0.6m and depth of 0.6m (maximum 1m); the stratigraphy comprised deposits of tarmacadam and gravel derived from previous service installations in the area. Previous archaeological work in this area indicated the ground was disturbed to an average depth of 1.2m. No original ground surfaces, features or stratigraphy of an archaeological nature were encountered.
