Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to a commercial property at 10 High Street, Galway, in June 2006. The site is located in the heart of the medieval walled town and lies within the zone of archaeological potential for Galway. It consists of a small rear yard with a very restricted working area. Testing comprised the manual excavation of three test-pits along the line of the proposed new wall. All three pits were excavated to a minimum depth of 0.65m. Post-medieval and early modern deposits and surfaces were recorded in all of the excavated pits and a possible medieval deposit was uncovered at the base of Test-pit 1. The possible medieval deposit should not be impacted on by the proposal, as the new foundation is to be just 0.6m deep. Monitoring of all excavations associated with the development was recommended.
