Notification of the grant of planning permission by Galway City Council in respect of a development at 55 Dominick Street Lower, Galway, requested pre-development testing in advance of development. The proposed development will see the demolition of the two-storey rear extension and the construction of a new extension at 55 Dominick Street. A single trench orientated east–west and measuring 6.3m in length and 1m in width was excavated. The stratigraphy encountered consisted of a sticky brown clay with moderate stone inclusions which extended for a depth of 0.85–1m. Finds from this context included 20th-century pottery fragments and one fragment of a clay-pipe stem. Below this context there was a light-grey silt with frequent small stone inclusions. At the west end of the trench a mass concrete foundation and plastic service pipeworks indicated the area of the former extension. The testing revealed that the site consisted of redeposited sticky clay overlying a natural silt.
