Assessment on the route of the proposed N6 Galway to Ballinasloe road scheme involved targeted test excavation of selected areas lying within the proposed road-take. Work was commissioned by Galway County Council and the National Roads Design Office and sponsored by the National Roads Authority.
Testing in Ballymabilla involved mechanical excavation of test-trenches. Centreline and offset test-trenches were excavated with the area investigated amounting to 1970m2. Test excavation across the site uncovered furrows related to modern agricultural activity. A series of circular to subcircular patches of dark soil were revealed, which, upon investigation, were found to represent patches of decayed stone surviving within the sockets of the former stones. Testing did not identify features of archaeological significance within this area of the proposed road-take.
