Monitoring of topsoil removal was undertaken at the site of a golf development on the shore of Ross Inner, Enniskillen, prior to the commencement of construction. A burnt spread and a curvilinear feature were identified with the development area.
The burnt spread consisted of charcoal-rich silty clay, which contained frequent pieces of charred wood. It measured 1.8m east–west by 1.97m. Removal of this material revealed the underlying subsoil to be oxidised to a reddish colour, indicating that burning occurred in situ. No archaeological finds were recovered from this feature.
The curvilinear feature measured 3.12m east–west by 1.4m and had a maximum depth of 0.42m deep. It is possible that both these features were related and that the curvilinear feature was a windbreak for the site of the fire, although no structural features, such as post-holes, were noted.
