Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed mixed-use scheme at Ballybough, Co. Dublin, in September 2006. The south-east part of the development site borders an 18th-century Jewish burial-ground. Testing comprised the excavation of a single, staggered, trench on the footprint of the south-east corner of the proposed building in close proximity to the cemetery’s boundary wall. The results of testing indicate that the existing ground level in this area is raised some 0.25m above the old ground level, which is represented by a disturbed topsoil layer. The topsoil overlay light-grey/brown silty sand, which was 0.15m in thickness and yielded a couple of post-medieval clay-pipe fragments. This overlay yellow/brown silty/clayey sand subsoil. No archaeological material was uncovered.
