The development of apartment blocks at this location is part of a larger development immediately to the south of the site under discussion. The initial development was the subject of monitoring undertaken by Kevin Lohan (Excavations 2004, No. 639, 04E0808). This licence was subsequently transferred to the writer. The site of the proposed development lies within the zone of archaeological constraint for Ringsend and was located in the Dodder mudflats, just off the spit of land which formed the historic village.
The assessment consisted of the mechanical excavation and examination of two archaeological trial-trenches and several geotechnical pits undertaken by ISGL Ltd. The licence application detailed the location of three trenches; it was decided, however, to excavate two trenches and to examine the geotechnical trenches and pits which were excavated over the area of the third archaeological trench.
The test excavation was undertaken in August and reclamation deposits containing 18th- and 19th-century ceramics, bottle glass and clay pipes were recorded under the ground slab.
