Monitoring took place as part of redevelopment at the site of the former St Loman’s Hospital, Palmerstown, Dublin. The site covered an area of about 8.6ha. The monitoring programme took place on a phased basis, commencing in March 2006 and recommencing in August 2006. A 25-tonne mechanical excavator fitted with a digging bucket was used from the level of topsoil down through the subsoil and on to bedrock. The ground was heavily disturbed in most places as a result of previous development for the original hospital. Where the ground was not disturbed, the material was sterile with no indication of any archaeological features or deposits.
