A test excavation was carried out on the site of The Thatch pub, located at the western end of the medieval village of Newcastle. A well-preserved motte is located 30m to the north of the proposed commercial development. Four test-trenches were excavated across the site but only a single trench contained features of archaeological interest. The poorly preserved foundations of a limestone wall (8m long, 0.3m wide, 0.2m deep) aligned east–west was uncovered along the base of Trench 4. Cartographic evidence and local sources suggest that the remains formed part of a stable associated with the public house dated to the 19th century. Further investigative work will be carried out in 2007.
