Testing was carried out at the Naul, Co. Dublin, on 2–3 February 2006. The work was undertaken in advance of the construction of 80 residential units and associated works. The project involves development in the southern section of the zone of archaeological constraint of DU004–045 (complex).
It was initially envisaged that the entire development area would be investigated, but the presence of overhead power lines in the area negated this possibility. Eleven test-trenches were excavated through the development area with a mechanical excavator using a toothless bucket. A number of features of possible archaeological significance were noted but further investigation showed that none were archaeological.
The proximity of the development to the archaeological complex and the inability of the testing programme to fully investigate the entire development area meant that there remained a possibility that archaeological material may be impacted by the development. Consequently it was recommended that groundworks be monitored.
